Churches

The region of Pelion has numerous beautiful churches scattered all around the villages of this mountain. Most churches are old and have been built according to the local architecture: with stone, wood, red tiles on the dome and a tall bell tower. You will see many of such churches as you drive around the villages. Driving is probably the best way to explore the area, so if you don’t have a car, you can ask your Pelion hotel to recommend you a car rental agency.

The village of Kissos should be your first stop in the trip because it has a famous church of this region, the church of Agia Marina. This church was built in the 18th century and has nice frescoes along with a wooden temple and rare icons. This lovely church is surrounded by tall lush trees. When you step inside, you will notice the decorated ceiling which has four beautifully painted domes. The first dome is near the exit with images from Agia Marina’s life. The second dome carries the images of Virgin Mary and her life and the third dome is dedicated to Lord Jesus. The fourth dome is special as it depicts God in the form of an old wise man.

In the village of Milies, you will come across the beautiful and impressive Church of Taxiarches. The altar of the church is decorated with beautiful wood carvings and paintings that date back to the 18th century. The Church of Agios Gerassimos is another beautiful church in Makrinitsa village. It was built in 1795 as the dependency of a monastery. The ceilings and walls are carved with writings and images from the Bible. There is plenty of folk art visible in this church.

Some of the important monasteries in this region, which serve as popular tourist destinations, include the Monastery of Theotokos Osias and Saint Lavrentios Monastery, constructed in 1378 and dedicated to monk Lavrentios, who had come to Pelion from Meteora. The locals organize a huge celebration in the memory of this monk every year on the first Sunday of June.
