Excursions

Pelion is located in central Greece and this makes it ideal for close excursions. First of all, make sure you have seen the whole area, which is large and beautiful. There are things to see in Pelion: traditional villages, folklore and historical museums, amazing beaches on the eastern side and lush greenery. The most famous villages are Makrinitsa, Portaria, Vizitsa, Milies and Horefto, which have maintained its unique traditional architecture.

On the eastern side of Pelion, there are beautiful beaches and fishing hamlets to spend some nice days. In summer, you can stay in the Pelion apartments you will find there and make excursions to the close mountainous areas. Most famous beaches of Pelion are Agios Ioannis, Milopotamos, Papa Nero and Horefto. Many taverns and beach bars are located there.

However, the areas around Pelion are also nice. First of all, you should not miss the town of Volos. Its long, paved waterfront sided by fish taverns serves as a relaxing walk. In the port, you will see a large wooden copy of Argo, the legendary ship which sailed from Volos and carried the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. Neoclassical buildings dot the town and many museums can be visited.

If you are interested in archaeological sites, there are some ancient towns to visit. In Almyros town, about 30 km from Volos, there is the archaeological site of Alos built on the slopes of Mount Iti and close to the coasts of the Pagasetic Gulf. This town was destroyed in the 3rd century B.C. by a strong earthquake.  Another important archaeological site is located close to Alykes town, 6 km from Volos. The ancient site of Dimitriada was established in the 3rd century B.C. by the Macedon king Demetrius and was abandoned in the 6th century A.D. The site includes an ancient theatre, remains of fortifications, a palace and a religious site.
