Villages

The villages in this peninsular region of Pelion can be seen scattered on the green mountain slopes as well as on the coastal area. These villages serve as the main tourist destination and have the necessary facilities and amenities to accommodate the large number of travelers that flock each year to this region. Each village is unique and famous for its architectural uniqueness or for its wonderful beaches.

In whichever Pelion hotel you are staying at, you can easily visit an village around Pelion. A very famous village of the area is Zagora, on the eastern side of the mountain. Due to the uneven landscape, the houses of Zagora are built amphitheatrically and give nice views to the surrounding area. In this village, you can see beautiful stone churches and the Greek Museum-School of Rigas Ferreos, which was a school of upper education established in the 18th century and having about 1,500 rare books and manuscripts in its library.

On the western side of the mountain, there is the beautiful village of Makrinitsa with an important historical past. The village became very popular during the 17th century. It was here that the idea of the Greek Revolution of 1821 was conceptualized. There is a folklore museum in the village inside the renovated Topali mansion, known as the Museum of Pelion Folklore Art and History. The village provides a scenic view of Pagassitikos Bay and Volos. There are many tavernas there where you can get delicious food. The houses are partly made out of stone and cement. The streets are cobbled and have few shops here and there.

Another famous mountainous village is Portaria, also built amphitheatrically. Portaria flourished in the 18th and the 19th century due to weaving and trade. Many elegant mansions were then built in the village, most of which have been transformed today into a Pelion hotel or a folklore museum. The paved square with the incredible views to the sea, the mountains and the neighboring villages will stay in your memory.

However, except for mountainous villages, Pelion also has many coastal settlements on its eastern side, where you will more probably find your Pelion apartments or rooms to rent in summer. These settlements are surrounded by gorgeous beaches, such as Papa Nero, Mylopotamos or Horefto, and have nice taverns and beach bars. They are great for relaxing family vacations.
